MBC, Minaminihon Broadcasting, is a television and radio station serving Kagoshima Prefecture, at the southern end of Kyushu. Kagoshima is the Japanese city that lives closest to an erupting volcano: Sakurajima stands about four kilometres across the bay, explodes hundreds of times in a normal year, and drops ash on the streets often enough that the city collects it in bags.

That is why a regional broadcaster keeps a camera on a mountain. Ash fall is local news here in the way that traffic or weather is elsewhere — which way the plume is drifting decides whether washing goes out and whether schools change their routine.

The stream on this site looks east from the city side, so the whole cone is in frame with the bay in front of it. Explosions are visible at any hour and glow after dark.
