YBS, Yamanashi Broadcasting System, is the television and radio station of Yamanashi prefecture, on the northern side of Mount Fuji. The mountain is the defining feature of the prefecture: the Fuji Five Lakes are here, most of the classic photographs are taken from this side, and the northern climbing route starts here.

A local broadcaster streaming the mountain is therefore doing something closer to reporting the weather than showing a landmark. Whether Fuji is visible on a given morning is a genuine daily question in Kōfu and around the lakes, and the answer changes by the hour.

The northern face is the one with the snow line that everyone knows, held from roughly October to June. Winter mornings are the clearest of the year, and summer often hides the peak behind haze for days at a time.
