Asahi Shimbun astronomy live
The Asahi Shimbun newspaper’s astronomy channel, which streams from observatories including the Subaru Telescope and CFHT on Mauna Kea.
Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan's largest daily newspapers, runs an astronomy channel that streams the night sky live from some of the best observing sites in the world, in cooperation with the observatories themselves.
Two of its streams come from the summit of Mauna Kea, on Hawaiʻi Island: one from the Subaru Telescope, run by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, looking east across the summit domes, and one from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, looking west along the ridge.
By day they show the domes above a sea of clouds. After dark they become something else: at 4,200 m, above about 40% of the atmosphere and most of its water vapour, the sky over Mauna Kea is among the clearest on Earth, and the streams pick up the Milky Way, satellites and the occasional meteor.
