RÚV eruption cams

Iceland’s national public broadcaster, which streams the Reykjanes eruption area.

RÚV is the national public broadcaster of Iceland, in radio and television since 1930. When an eruption starts, it sets up cameras at a safe distance and streams them live, often within hours, and shares them free on the internet.

Those streams have become part of how Icelandic eruptions are seen abroad. During the Reykjanes eruptions, with fissures opening a few kilometres from Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon, the pictures that people around the world watched at night came largely from broadcasters like this one.

Because they are news cameras, their position changes with the events: they follow the fissure that is active, and they are taken down when an eruption ends. On this site they appear on the Reykjanes page, next to the fixed cameras of the Icelandic webcam networks, which keep watching the same area between eruptions.
